I am always looking for quick, yet personal gift ideas for friends and family. I love to create handmade cards to send out. These cards I am using for myself, but they would make a fantastic, easy, inexpensive gift.
To create washi tape cards you need a few simple supplies, many of which you probably already have (contains affiliate links):
- Blank cards and envelopes
- Washi tape
- Stamps and ink (I usually get these from the dollar bins at Jo-Anns and Michaels)
- Baker’s twine
- Corner punch
- Scrap card stock
You may also need scissors, dimensional foam tape, scrapbook adhesive
, stapler, and pens
.
I am going to give brief instructions on how to make five different card designs. Each one takes less than 5 minutes to make!
Before we start decorating the cards, use your corner punch to round the bottom edges of each card.
Criss Cross Washi Tape Card
Start by using three coordinating strips of washi tape.
I simply tore the washi tape, but if you want a more finished edge you can use scissors. Attach three vertical strips to your card base. Space them a little apart.
Now, use three smaller strips and attach them horizontally.
Stamp a design onto card stock. I chose to use black ink on white card stock. I felt like it was a good contrast to the kraft paper cards and colorful washi. Cut out around the edge of your design.
Use a small piece of dimensional foam tape and attach it to your card either in the center or a little offset to the middle of where the washi tape crosses.
Stamp a sentiment directly on the bottom right corner of the card.
Rainbow Stripes Washi Card
Choose an assortment of washi tapes in rainbow colors. I chose red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink.
Rip off strips of washi tape a little smaller than the width of your card. Attach them to your card in a rainbow pattern with each strip touching the previous tape.
Again, stamp an image onto card stock, cut around it and attach with dimensional tape.
Rainbow Washi Banner Card
Again choose a rainbow of colors of washi tape.
Cut strips of washi tape. Cut a ‘v-shape’ from the bottom of each strip of washi tape. Place on your card. The ends will hang over at the top.
Trim the excess washi tape from the top with your scissors. Stamp a sentiment in the bottom right corner.
Thank You Washi Tape Card
Trim a piece of card stock to fit on your card. Again I used white card stock. Punch the edges with a corner punch. Attach to card with adhesive.
Attach coordinating strips of washi tape around the perimeter of your card stock. (Isn’t that bird tape fun?)
Stamp a sentiment on card stock and trim around the edges to create a square. Corner punch the edges. Use dimensional foam tape to attach to card. I started with the colored stamped paper off to the side, but ended up moving it to the center.
Pennant Banner Washi Tape Card
Create a washi tape pennant banner using your baker’s twine.
Staple each end of the string to the card. I hand wrote the word ‘hi’ onto the card.
To give these cards as a gift, be sure to include the envelopes. Stack the envelopes and cards together and secure with additional baker’s twine. This would make a great teacher appreciation gift or neighbor gift.
Do you like to hand make cards for yourself or to give as gifts?

I have a supply of washi tape and am unable to use it at all. It has all stuck together and can’t get it to come off the roll without tearing. Do you have any suggestions on how to get the tape to unroll without tearing up.

Billie,
I have had luck with two different methods. First, I will cut through several layers with an X-Acto knife. Then I peel the top few layers off using the place where I cut to start peeling. Once I get back to a single layer, then I usually can peel it easily. You can also try putting your tape in the microwave for just a couple of seconds. This can help re-activate the adhesive. Hope that helps!

The cards are so cute! I’m more of a washi tape hoarder, mainly because I don’t know what to do with it, but you’ve given me some inspiration! Thanks!
