How to Make St. Patrick’s Day Pretzel Rods
Add your candy melts or melting chocolate to a skinny, tall jar. I like to use 1.5-pint (24-ounce) mason jars, but a tall, thin glass also works well.
Start by melting the chocolate according to the package directions. If you use a microwave, you will usually melt the chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring between each one until it is completely melted.

Stir the chocolate with a chopstick or small spatula.
Dip the pretzel into the melted chocolate. If you want to add more chocolate to the pretzel, tip the jar on its side and twirl it in the glass until it is covered.

Allow the excess chocolate to drop off the pretzel before allowing you to cool on wax paper. You can also dry the pretzel rods on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

If you don’t allow the excess to drip off, you will end up with a pool of melted chocolate under the pretzel, which will not look as nice.
Allow the chocolate to set slightly. Add sprinkles. I found green and white sprinkles and gold pieces to add to my pretzels.
Note: If you don’t allow the chocolate to set for about a minute, the sprinkles will run off the sides of the pretzel.
Melt more white chocolate and color with food coloring. You can also use green candy melts for this step.
Add to a piping bag. Cut a tiny hole at the end and drizzle green chocolate onto the pretzels.

Allow the pretzels to cool completely.

You can package these in gift bags to give as a party favor or treat for a class party.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What type of chocolate should I use? You can use almond bark, candy melts, or melting chocolate. Follow the instructions on the package for melting the chocolate.
- How long do candy-covered pretzels last? These should last about 2 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature.
- Do chocolate-covered pretzels need to be refrigerated? No. In fact, they are best stored at room temperature. Do not store them in the fridge, as they will have condensation and get soggy.
- Can I use chocolate chips to dip pretzels? You can, but the melted chocolate is often too thick. Add a little shortening or coconut oil to make it easier to dip.
- Are pretzel sticks and rods the same? While “pretzel sticks” and “pretzel rods” are both pretzel types, they’re different. Pretzel rods are typically thicker and sturdier than pretzel sticks, making them better for dipping.
