Preschool Activity Pages: Practice Using Scissors. Help your preschooler practice his/her fine motor skills with these free printable practice sheets.
When my kids were younger, I created printable worksheets we could use at home to help them learn different educational concepts over the summer.
These activities are geared from preschoolers on up. As I create them for my children, I am sharing them here on the blog with all of you!

First up are some sheets to help practice fine motor skills – specifically, using scissors. Your child can practice four different cutting skills – cutting curved lines, shapes, straight lines, and zigzags.
These sheets are fairly simple. I didn’t want to use up a ton of my printer ink cartridges just to have my kids cut the sheets up! The printable PDF includes all four pages of the practice sheets.
Why Practice using Scissors?
- Improve hand-eye coordination
- Strengthen hands and fingers
- Develop bilateral coordination – using both sides of your body simultaneously while your hands are doing different things
Scissor Safety First
Before practicing with scissors with your preschooler or young child, it is important to go over safety rules first.
- Scissors are for cutting paper, ONLY!
- Scissors are for use with adult supervision.
- Also, for small children walking with scissors is not allowed. Running with scissors is never allowed for any age.
What Scissors to Choose?
Choose small scissors made specifically for children with a blunt end, but that is sharp enough to cut without simply folding the paper over. These Fiskars scissors have always been our favorite when the kids were little. They are comfortable to hold and come with a cap for placing them in a pencil pouch.
