Kitchenaid Mixer Bowl Cover. Sew a cover for your Kitchenaid mixer bowl to keep out dust and crumbs. Your mixer will always be ready to use!
I am excited to be participating in Laura Bray’s Fork It Over Blog Hop. She selected bloggers to make a project with her new fabric she designed. You can find the Fork It Over fabric at Spoonflower. A big thank you to Laura for sending me a fat quarter of her super cute fabric to create with.

I had so many ideas for what to do with this fabric. I thought it would be cute to embellish a kitchen towel with a strip of the fabric, or even make a sweet apron with it. Ultimately, I settled on creating a cover for my KitchenAid mixer bowl.
I love my KitchenAid mixer bowl. For those of you who have one can attest to, they are a little bit bulky and fairly heavy. My cabinets in my kitchen are not very big. The only place I can store my mixer out of site is in a cabinet above my head, and that just isn’t safe! So it sits out on my counter all the time. And because it sits out all the time, the inside of the bowl can get dusty and food crumbs can fall into it between uses. I don’t like having to wash out the bowl every time! A fat quarter is a perfect size to make a KitchenAid mixer bowl cover for yourself.
KitchenAid Mixer Bowl Cover
Supplies needed:
- KitchenAid stand mixer with bowl
- Fat quarter of fabric (Fork It Over)
- 1/4″ elastic
- Sewing machine and coordinating thread
Cut Fabric
First, you will measure out how big you need your circle to be. Place your bowl, top side down onto the wrong side of your fabric. Using a compass, set the distance between the point and the pencil to be about 2 inches. Using the point of the compass as a guide, trace around the outside edge of your bowl.
Note: Since your bowl may be slightly different than the one I have, I am sharing general directions on how to get a good measurement for your particular bowl.
Cut out your circle of fabric.
Create Curved Hem
I found a helpful hint for hemming a curve of fabric at By Hand London. The method I chose to create my hem was the first one listed. Since my elastic was 1/4″ wide, I wanted a hem that ended up being 3/8″ wide. It is only slightly bigger than the elastic. Start by sewing a straight stitch around the entire circle at 3/8″. Using the stitches as your guide, turn in your hem and iron.
Repeat this step again, this time using the ironed edge as your guide to help turn the fabric in for the second time. I would recommend pinning as you go to keep everything in place. You may have to gather your fabric a little along the back since you have curved edges.
Sew Hem
Sew as close to the folded edge as possible. Be sure to leave an inch or two open at the end to be able to insert your elastic.
Add Elastic
Using the top edge of your bowl as a guide, measure how much elastic you will need. I stretched the elastic around the top edge and cut it. You want the elastic to be pretty tight around the bowl.
To add your elastic, start by taking a safety pin and pinning it to one end of your elastic. Slide the safety pin through your opening in your fabric hem. It is much easier to pull the safety pin around the inside of the hem than the thin elastic.
Once you get around to the other side, you will use your sewing machine to attach the two ends of the elastic together. You can use a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch for this.
Then, finish off the opening of your seam by sewing it closed. Your KitchenAid mixer bowl cover is ready to keep your bowl nice and clean!

Thank you Kara. This fabric is so fun and was perfect for my kitchen. I am trying to bring in more of this blue color so it worked out perfectly!

This is great!! I’m still a bit new to sewing, but this looks like a project I could handle. Thanks!

I am a self-taught sewist. I am never sure if I am really doing things the “right” way, but I figure if it gets the job done and doesn’t come apart then I am good to go! Have a wonderful week!

Love the bowl cover…I am a huge KitchenAid fan also :)

Thank you Tammy! KitchenAids are the best!

I’m impressed! I don’t know if I could manage this, but it came out cute and it’s a great idea…my KitchenAid mixer sits out all the time and it’s the exact same color as the fabric.

I am not the best at sewing. The trickiest part is turning down the hem around the circle. But it doesn’t have to be perfect! You could also cut a large circle from felt or another material that doesn’t need to be hemmed, cut some slits around the edges and thread a ribbon through. Then, just cinch and tie on a bow! Have a wonderful week.

You could use a shower cap for a cover.

That is a great idea for someone on a budget or who doesn’t want to sew! I wanted something pretty that would match the rest of my kitchen decor since it is on my counter all the time.

A lot of Laura’s around here! This is a great idea. My bowl always needs to be washed before I can use it!
Laura Silva says
Mine always did too! I love having it on the counter because I use it more, but washing it before AND after using it is no fun! Have a great week!

Does the silver piece that holds the attachments to the mixer just kind of push the cover down a little bit?
Laura Silva says
Yes, it does push down just a little bit, but does not prevent it from staying on.

I just love this idea. I hated having that great big cover over my mixer so really wanted to try this. After making one that didn’t fit (my mistake) I did notice that the post that holds the attachments on my mixer seems to extend down farther than yours. Is that going to be a problem?
Laura Silva says
I think if you make your cover a little bit bigger then you should be okay. Mine only comes down just below the rim of the bowl, but if you make yours to extend about an inch or two below the edge of the bowl, I think that will allow your post to push down on the cover without snapping it off. I hope that helps! I would love to see a picture of your finished cover.

Gonna have to do this one. It looks pretty easy.

It is an easy sewing project. Plus, I think you will love it! I love not having to clean the bowl each time I want to use my mixer.

Thank you for this! I need to make one for my mixer. I hate having to wash the bowl after I use it and then again before I use it.
p.s. I think someone is using one of your photos on their etsy listing
Laura Silva says
I disliked having to do that too! It works great for keeping the bowl clean. Thanks for letting me know about the Etsy listing. Have a great weekend!

I am on my way to make one of these right now. Then one for my daughter and granddaughter. What a great idea!! Can store a lot of the attachments in the bowl now and not have to worry about them getting dust covered–and then will be right there when I need them. Thank you so much!!
Laura Silva says
Barbara,
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial and are able to make some gifts for your family. I still love and use mine all the time with my mixer out on the counter.

I cut 2 circles and sewed tgem together.making a casing for elastic..leaving the opening to push the elastic thru…but it avoided having to make the hemmed edge..and could use two different fabrics if you choose.

Dee,
Thank you for sharing! That sounds like a great idea.

What a fantastic idea. I think I might be one of the only people who doesn’t have a Kitchen Aid and my mixer has a cover but love this idea anyway.

This one is one of the most wanted kitchen tools. Thanks for sharing this.
Leigh-Anne Jones says
Can I just ask, do you cut a hole out in the middle for the post to got through? How do you finish that off?
Laura Silva says
Leigh-Anne,
I didn’t cut a hole in mine, although that certainly is an option. The easiest way to do this would be to create a button-hole in the middle using your sewing machine. If you make the cover large enough, there is enough flex in the fabric for the middle post to sort of just push it down. I haven’t had problems with it ripping the fabric or pulling up the edges. Hope that helps!
