How to Make a Tulle Tutu Skirt. Make a fun tutu skirt easily with minimal (or no) sewing. Perfect for dance class or a Halloween costume.

My daughter is in dance. She loves to dress up for ballet with not only her leotard and tights but a pretty skirt. We have a few, but I wanted to make her one myself. Today, I am sharing how to make a tulle tutu skirt. It is really easy to do and requires minimal (or no) sewing.

Supplies:

• 6″ Tulle Spools
• Elastic (1/2″ – 1″, preferably)
• Sewing machine
  • Optional: Needle and Thread or Safety Pin

Start by trimming your elastic to fit the waist of the child or adult you are making the skirt for. If you are doing light-colored tulle, choose white elastic, and if you are using a dark-colored tulle, choose black elastic.

Helpful tip: My daughter was at school when I started this project, so I used one of her skirt waistbands as a guide to measure the correct length of elastic.

Use your sewing machine to stitch the two ends of the elastic together. I like to use a zigzag stitch and go forward and reverse over the elastic several times.

Note: You can use a needle and thread for this step, or simply attach the ends together with a safety pin if you don’t sew.

Next, you will need to trim your tulle. I prefer to use the tulle rolls since they are a great width for this project. You can also get tulle by the bolt, but you will have to trim both the length and the width into strips first. I used the groove in my folding table to cut a straight line.

Helpful tip: A good rule of thumb is to double the length you want, plus add double the width of your elastic. My daughter’s skirt is about 14 inches long. So I doubled that to get 28 inches, plus added 2 inches for the 1″ waistband. So, I cut each strip approximately 30″ long. They don’t have to be perfect or exact.

Once you have your strips of tulle cut out, you will add them to the elastic waistband. Start by folding the strip of tulle in half. Then place the loop at the top of the fold behind the elastic. Pull the ends of the tulle up through the loop you have wrapped around the elastic. Make sure to pull it tight to hold it in place.

Continue this process until you have loops of tulle around the entire elastic waistband.

When you are finished, you can hand stitch or use your sewing machine and a straight stitch around the elastic to help hold the tulle in place after you are finished. This will help to keep the loops nice and tight.

It will also help when you need to wash the skirt so that it doesn’t fall apart. I would recommend hand washing with cool water and a gentle detergent, as needed (or use the gentle cycle on your washer). The tulle seems to do best with air drying rather than using the dryer.

These skirts are perfect for dance class or a Halloween costume.

I originally created the tulle skirt to use around a round-table at my daughter’s Princess Tea birthday party. I re-used the tulle I cut out for that project to create this skirt. For the table decor instead of using elastic, I used a thin ribbon. Then I wrapped the tulle wrapped ribbon around the table and tied it in a bow.
