Group and Attach in Cricut Design Space
Both tools are available in the layers panel, allowing you to move and size your images on the canvas.
Being able to proportionately move and size your images as one is a great way to easily combine elements of your design for your Cricut projects.
Note: The layers panel also includes the slice tool, weld tool, attach tool, flatten tool, and contour tool at the bottom of the layers panel.
You can also right click on the design to group and ungroup the different layers.
How to Group in Cricut Design Space
The group function is located at the top of the layers panel. It allows you to group multiple layers, images, or text together so that they move and size together on the canvas.
The group tool does not change how the images or text appear on the cutting mat.
I started by adding a tote bag template to my canvas to see how this works. Then, I added some images to the canvas. I chose some cute designs from the Makers Gonna Make cartridge.
Align the images, and then click on Select All.
In the layers panel, select Group. Now, you can resize all the images to fit the tote bag.
Clicking the Ungroup button will separate each part of the design into a single layer.
How to Use Group With Text
Use the ungroup function to move images, layers, and text independently of each other on the canvas. Being able to ungroup text makes it much easier to format your design.
If you click ungroup once, you can move and size each layer of text. If you click ungroup a second time, you can move and size each letter independently.
Add text to your design. I chose the Cricut font Library 3. Click Ungroup.
Now, you can separate the layers of the text from each other.
If you select one of the text layers and click Ungroup again, you can move each of the individual letters. You can adjust the letter spacing however you want.
How to Attach in Cricut Design Space
The Attach function in the layers panel works similarly to the group tool but affects how images and text are placed on the Cricut mat when cutting. You also use the Attach tool to connect writing and score lines to a layer in your project.
If we go to the mat preview screen after grouping the two images for the tote bag, you will see that they will be cut out from two different materials.
If we select both images and then click Attach in the layers panel, the designs will be cut from the same mat in the exact placement on the canvas.
How to Use Attach With Score Lines AND text
You will also use attach to fasten your writing or score line onto a layer.
Let’s say we want to create a card from scratch. Start by adding a rectangle 8″ wide by 6″ tall. This will make the finished folded card 4″ x 6″.

Add a Score Line in the design panel. Change the size to 6″. Click Select All and then Align. Choose Center so that the score line will be perfectly aligned on your card.
Add some text to the front of the card. I typed out a simple Happy Birthday message. Not shown: Select your text layer and change the line type to Draw.

Attach everything together by clicking Select All. You can also select everything by clicking on the canvas and dragging over your design. Then click Attach in the layers panel.
This links all the layers together so the Cricut machine knows where to score and write on the card before cutting it out.
When to Use Group or Attach in Cricut Design Space
Use Group to keep your design elements together on the canvas while designing.
Use Attach when you need to keep your design elements exactly the same on the cutting mat as they are arranged on the canvas.
