Today I have a felt craft that will take you 15 minutes or less to complete. I am sharing how to create your own Horton Hatches the Egg felt storyboard. This comes at a perfect time because for the first half of this year I will be homeschooling my daughter for pre-K. Felt storyboards are a great way for your child to interact with the stories they know and love!

Horton Hatches the Egg Felt Storyboard
Supplies:
- Felt – Gray, Black, Red, Yellow, Brown, White, Red and White Polka Dot
- Googly Eyes
- Glue
- Scissors
- Print out of characters from the book (optional)
This craft couldn’t be simpler! You can either free-hand draw your images onto your felt, or you can use copies of images from the book to create your characters. Since Horton was a little more complex than a simple tree or egg, I made a copy with my printer of one of the images from the book of him sitting on the tree. Cut around the outside edge of the image.
Tip: Use straight pins to pin the image to your felt to keep it in place as you cut.
Since what you are left with is a somewhat nondescript shape when going around the outline, it helps to cut out a few extra shapes in either the same color felt or a slightly lighter or darker felt. I cut out extra shapes for Horton’s trunk, leg and one of his feet, using my paper template as a guide. Glue the shapes to your main shape you cut out.
Add google eyes and color on some eyebrows with a black Sharpie, if desired.
Next, I cut out the nest and egg shapes. To make the nest look more realistic, I cut a little fringe around the entire outside edge. I then glued a smaller piece of red-fringed felt to the black to make it look like the nest in the story.
To create the polka dot egg, I used some red and gold polka dot glitter felt I had. You could also cut out a red egg and add small white dots to create the same effect.
I created the tree trunk and supports using brown felt and some yellow felt. I simply freehand cut these out without drawing anything. If you are more comfortable you can draw out the shapes on the back of the felt ahead of time.
To recreate the snow scene, I traced the top of my Horton shape to get the outline of the top edge of his back. Then, I freehand cut out icicle shapes.
Lastly, I cut out the shape of Mayzie, the bird. Again I used an image I copied from the book using my printer/copier.
My daughter thinks it is fun to act out the scenes of the book on her flannel board. The felt will stick to either flannel or more felt. The great thing about these storyboards is you can add as little or as much as you want!
My daughter has even requested some more images from other parts of the book. When you are not using them, store all your pieces in a Ziploc bag. These felt storyboards are great for creating busy bags as well. Simply add a solid colored larger piece of felt or flannel to your bag for your kids to create their story on anywhere – in the car, at church, or at a restaurant!
This craft was part of Craft Lightning Dr. Seuss Edition. Hosted by The Country Chic Cottage, 30 Minute Crafts and Mom Endeavors, bloggers come together to share quick, 15 minute or fewer crafts all revolving around one central theme! Be sure to check out all three blogs this week to see the rest of the projects linked up. This time around the theme is Dr. Seuss! Last year, I shared how to create your very own forest of truffula trees.
