How To Make a Pillow From a Placemat
This project takes a few simple supplies and only moments of your time.
Supplies:
- Placemat(s)
- Seam Ripper
- PolyFil
- Needle and Thread (or Sewing Machine)
Start by taking a seam ripper and removing the stitches from the bottom of the pillow. I like to take mine out in the middle because it makes it easier to fill all four corners with stuffing.
Note: If you will use the pillow outside, now is a great time to spray the fabric with UV protective spray.

Next, fill the pillow with PolyFil. My favorite is from Fairfield World, but you can use any kind you find at the craft store.
Lastly, use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to close up the opening at the bottom of the pillow.
You can also close the pillow using a hot glue gun or fabric glue. I don’t recommend the hot glue method if you plan to wash the pillow in the washing machine.
And that’s it! Enjoy your festive pillow. I used a fun butterfly fabric that I will be using on my rocking chairs out front.
Our weather is harsh with the sun and wind, so even if these only last one season, I am okay with that since they are so inexpensive!
