Dollar Tree Beach Garland. Hand paint nautical themed wooden shapes from Dollar Tree to make a charming beach garland.
I wanted to bring a little bit of the beach into our home for some cute summer decor. Dollar Tree has the cutest nautical and beach-themed crafting items.
How to Make a Beach Garland
Today, I will show you how to create a nautical or beach-themed garland. This project is pretty easy, but it takes some time to do all the painting.
Supplies:
- Beach Shaped Wood Cutouts (Sailboat, Turtle, and Starfish)
- Wood Bead Garland
- Jute Cord
- Acrylic Paint
- Paintbrush
Start by choosing your paint colors. I love the FolkArt acrylic paint by Plaid. I picked some beachy colors, such as white, teal, and tan.
- FolkArt Matte Wicker White
- FolkArt Matte Linen
- FolkArt Matte Minted Aqua
- FolkArt Matte Dutch Aqua
- FolkArt Multi-Surface Patina
- FolkArt Matte Aqua
Paint Shapes
Once you choose your paint colors, start to paint the wood shapes. I painted mine on both sides, in case the shapes spin, hanging on the mantel.
I painted the turtle dark teal, the starfish tan, and the sailboat lighter teal. The little anchors that came with the wooden garland were mint teal.
Paint Beads
Then, paint all the wooden beads.
I found it easiest to place the bead on the end of a golf tee and paint it on there.

Paint Details
You could leave all the shapes as is or add some details like I did. I added spots to the turtle’s head and legs.
Then, the starfish already had pre-printed circles on it, so I painted those white.
Lastly, I added some whitewash to the teal sailboats. I added water to my white paint and carefully brushed it from left to right. Then, I did the same with the teal paint and went from right to left.
Assemble Garland
First, I added all the painted beads to the twine, in color order from white, tan, light teal, to the darkest teal.
Then, I added the twine hangers that came with the wooden shapes onto each one. I tied each shape on the garland in between every two beads.
I added the smaller anchors that came with the wooden bead garland. I used the strand that the garland was strung on and cut it into pieces. Then I tied the small anchors on as well.
I alternated the wooden shapes – turtle, sailboat, starfish, anchor – until I reached the end of the garland.
Then, I hung it on my mantel with some other cute decorations I found at Dollar Tree.
We love to go to the beach, but we live in the Southwest and don’t get to go as often as we would like. This was an excellent way to bring that beach feel home.
