Cricut Joy Frequently Asked Questions
I have been getting a lot of questions about this new little cutie. Today, I have partnered with Cricut to answer the most frequently asked questions about the Cricut Joy machine.
Will It Be Easy for Me to Learn the Software?
Yes! All of the newer Cricut Machines – Cricut Explore Air 2, Cricut Maker, and Cricut Joy – use Cricut Design Space software to design and create your project.
Cricut Design Space used to be entirely web-based, but now there is an offline Desktop version you download right onto your PC or MAC computer.

The software is very user friendly. You can download and use the software without even owning a machine to try it out. Simply go to https://design.cricut.com/ and create an account.
Cricut Design Space includes over 400 Cricut fonts. You can also use your fonts downloaded to your computer.
You will have access to over 100,000+ images to use to create your designs. You can also upload your images and SVGs to truly customize your projects.

If you are just getting started with any Cricut machine, I recommend trying out one of the Make it Now projects. These are projects that are pre-designed and ready to create. Simply choose the project you want to make, click Make It, and cut out the design.
Some images and fonts come free with Cricut Design Space. To get the best value for working with the software, I recommend purchasing a Cricut Access subscription. You can choose a monthly, annual, or premium membership.
Every Cricut Access subscription comes with a 10% savings on all product purchases at Cricut.com, including machines, accessories, materials, and more – including sale items!

What Materials Can I Cut with Cricut Joy?
The Cricut Joy can cut over 50 materials including vinyl, iron-on, cardstock, paper, construction paper, faux leather, infusible ink, and more.
Full List of Cricut Joy Materials
Cricut Joy Smart Materials
Cricut Joy is the only machine you can use with the new Smart Materials. Smart Materials work without a cutting mat. Load the material directly into the machine and go!
Smart Materials come in a variety of types including Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, Smart Label Paper, and Smart Label Vinyl.
You can use Smart Materials to cut continuous shapes up to 4 feet and repeated cuts up to 20 feet!
The Cricut Smart Label Vinyl allows you to create beautiful labels with the pen in just minutes. Use the Cricut Joy Pens* to write your label and cut it out without a mat to get your home organized quickly and beautifully.
*Does not work with Cricut Joy Gel Pens or Metallic Markers
Cricut Joy Card Mat AND iNSERT cARDS
One of the other cool features about Cricut Joy is you can purchase a special Card Mat that works with Cricut Insert Cards to create a card in just minutes.
The card mat allows you to insert a pre-scored card onto the mat before cutting. Cricut Joy will only cut the top layer of the card and not through to the backside of the card.
Cricut Joy Pens
The Cricut Joy’s adapter uses compact size pens. Simply remove the cutting blade and slide in the pen to write.
What Kind of DIY Projects Can I Make?
With the Cricut Joy’s new, smaller size you may be wondering what types of projects can you make with this machine.
Cards
Above I talked about making cards with the Card Mat and Insert Cards packs. These cards came together in just minutes. Imagine being able to create a custom card on the way out the door to a party or get-together.
Iron-on T-Shirts
Use the Cricut Joy to cut out iron-on to create custom t-shirts. Use Smart Iron-on to cut without a mat, or use a cutting mat and any Cricut iron-on you cut to fit.
Custom Vinyl Signs
Use Smart Vinyl to cut out vinyl without a mat, or use any vinyl you have in your stash with a mat. I created a fun sign for my craft room.
The width of the images you can cut is only 4.5″ but being able to cut up to 20 feet using Smart Vinyl and layering your designs, you can create much larger designs than you may have imagined.
With the capability to cut up to 20 feet using Smart Vinyl, you can easily create large home decor signs without struggling in Design Space to re-size your image to fit the cutting mat.
Organizing Labels
Label all the things! No more being limited by small tape label makers to get your home organized. Easily customize labels for every room in your home.
One of the best features of the Cricut Joy machine is its small size. It is SO portable and easy to use. Grab the Joy, your smartphone with the Cricut Design Space app, and a package of Smart Materials to craft in any room of the house.
This little machine is perfect for grabbing and taking with you on the go, as well. You can purchase the padded carrying tote to take this little machine with you.
