How to Make a Reverse Canvas
Supplies:
- 8″ x 10″ Canvas
- Paint or Stain
- Cricut Machine
- Black Iron-On
- EasyPress or Iron
What is a Reverse Canvas?
A reverse canvas is a way to take an inexpensive stretched canvas frame and turn it into a rustic piece of art.
To start, remove the canvas from the frame. You can do this by cutting the canvas off the back using a craft knife.
You can also remove the staples using a flathead screwdriver and pliers, and then carefully pull the canvas off the back.
Next, use paint or stain to cover the bare wood frame. I chose to use a stain and poly mix from Behr paint. Allow the frame to dry.

The next step is to decorate the canvas you removed from the frame.
Cut the canvas to fit on the backside of the frame. My frame is 8″ x 10″ so I cut it a little smaller than that.
Measure the size of the inside of your frame. This will be the area you have to work with to add an image to.
Cricut Design Space – Camping Reverse Canvas
I used Cricut Design Space to find some camping designs I could cut out of black iron-on. Regular vinyl (not heat transfer vinyl) does not stick well to the canvas, and I always recommend using the kind that you can iron on.
I found four camping designs that I really loved that come with Cricut Access, but I ultimately decided on the “Camping is My Happy Place” to put on my canvas.

I have sized the designs to fit inside my 8″ x 10″ frame. If you want to use these with a larger or smaller frame, you will need to resize the designs.
Use a Cricut machine to cut out the iron-on. Make sure to select Mirror Image on the mat preview page.
Choose the type of iron on you will be using from the drop-down menu and cut out the design.
Next, weed all of the excess iron on.
Use the Cricut Heat Guide to determine the temperate settings and time for the EasyPress. If you are using an iron, follow the instructions that came with the vinyl.

Once you have applied the iron on to the canvas, use a staple gun to reattach the canvas to the back side of the frame.
Enjoy your new camping sign! I plan to hang ours in our RV using some command strips. I may make a couple more matching frames to make a small gallery wall in our RV.
