Back to School Charcuterie. Learn how to make this cute back to school themed snack tray and table to celebrate the first day of school.
My oldest is a senior in high school this year, and I am trying to make the most of every moment we still have left with him at home.
So, for the first day of school, I created a fun back to school charcuterie board and table for us to celebrate. It didn’t take long at all, and we got to talk all about the kids first day while enjoying some fun food.

What is a Charcuterie Board?
Traditionally, a charcuterie board is a selection of preserved meats, cheeses, crackers, nuts, fruits, jams, and butter laid out on a board or platter.
It is often an appetizer, but more elaborate boards can be a casual meal. They are usually served with wine.
There are many spin-offs, such as dessert boards, Thanksgiving boards, and themed boards like this one. Another name is grazing boards.
What to Put on a Charcuterie Board
Below is a list to get you started, but you can include pretty much anything you want. There are tips on creating the “perfect” board, but having a mix of flavors and textures is always a good idea.
- Meats
- Cheeses
- Bread and Crackers
- Dips and Spreads
- Pickles and Olives
- Fruit
- Nuts
Special Ingredients
For this board, I added several items to accompany the back to school theme.
I started by adding gummy worms to represent bookworms and Smarties candies. Normally, I don’t add candy to my boards, but these were a fun addition with a back-to-school theme.
Next, I created “apple” pretzels. Dip each pretzel in melted red candy melts. Then, melt green candy melts. Add a drop of green to the top of each pretzel. Allow them to dry. It can help to place them in the refrigerator for a bit.
And everyone knows apples are often associated with school, so I cut up red and green apple slices.

I also decorated the rest of the table.
Every year, I print out a first day of school sign. We take pictures on the front porch before the kids leave for school. I placed these on the end of the table.
I used red paper plates on top of a wood grain charger. Then, I folded green napkins into triangles to use as a leaf. I cut up a brown paper bag to make “stems” for the apples.
Traditionally, charcuterie boards are served with wine. But since this was for the whole family, I purchased some special drinks from Trader Joe’s.
