My son started second grade last Monday and we are back to the grind with doing homework nightly. To stay organized and have everything we need at homework time, I created a homework caddy with all the necessary supplies. This way, there are no excuses once we sit down to do homework at night. We have been using this system since last year and it works great!
I purchased this caddy from Family Dollar. It was only a couple of dollars. I used disposable plastic cups to separate the supplies within the caddy.
Our homework caddy includes:
- colored pencils
- kid scissors
- pencil sharpener
- glue sticks
These supplies are sufficient for most of my son’s regular elementary school homework. My daughter (she is 4 years old) does not like to be left out and she is able to do an art project at the same time my son works on his homework.
Just for fun (and because I love to label everything) I created a printable to attach to the front. I laminated it and punched two holes in the top. I attached it to my homework bucket with zip ties.
I am sure as my kids get older our needs will change for what we need for homework, but this solution will continue to work well to keep my kids organized. If you have older kids with different needs you could also consider adding or replacing the supplies I mentioned above with:
- note cards
- math compass
- lined paper
- graph paper
We store our homework caddy on top of the pantry cabinet in our kitchen. We normally do homework at the kitchen table, so this works well for us. The magazine file holds a clipboard and preschool worksheets that my daughter is working on.
