Celebrate an October birthday with a fun Halloween birthday party! Decorate the house with spooky spiders, create a graveyard for photos and festive food!
Every year since my kids were little, I have thrown a fun themed birthday party for each of my kids. I think planning parties is so much fun! My son decided on a Halloween theme for his 7th birthday. I normally decorate a little for Halloween, but last year I was able to go over the top!

Halloween Birthday Party Invitation
I started by creating a Halloween party invitation. We invited everyone to wear a costume to the party – both grown-ups and children. We made it a Halloween party and a birthday party all in one!
Halloween Party Decorations
Next up, came all the decorations. I decorated our front entryway for people to see when they were walking through the house to the backyard where we actually held the party. We had a Halloween apothecary table, creepy spider display, graveyard, and more!
Spider Decorations
Supplies:
I started by creating a creepy spider display from an idea I found at Martha Stewart.
You will start by wrapping your foam sphere with white batting.
Place the wrapped styrofoam sphere into your stocking. Start adding in spiders around the sphere until you feel like you have enough.
Next, you will hot glue spiders on to the outside of the stocking as well.
Hang it to the ceiling using a push pin. Because the styrofoam ball has some weight to it, the pantyhose stretch out nicely to create a realistic effect. I then added paper spiders to the wall using double-sided tape starting at the table area and moving all the way up to the hallway entrance. I also added some inexpensive spiderwebs.
Halloween Apothecary Display
On the front table, we had a scary apothecary jar display. I started by draping a black creepy cloth over the entire table. I added our mirror and a glittery DIY Halloween spider web plate to the table. I purchased a bunch of glass jars and added Halloween labels to them.
The jars contain eyeballs, rats, spiders, snakes, “poison”, fake fingers, and other creepy items. To create the poison, I used water and food dye, and in one of the bottles, we used slime.
Contact Paper Ghost
We added a DIY spooky ghost to the guest bathroom mirror.
I also added a vinyl sign that said you’re next to the back of the bathroom door for people to see once the door was closed. I purchased it at Dollar Tree.
Halloween Party Table
For the party table, I used a fun orange and black polka-dot vinyl tablecloth I found at Target. I stapled plain black tablecloths behind the party table on our porch. This created a nice backdrop while also providing some shade for the food. I hung orange and black paper lanterns. Then I stapled up a creepy cloth and placed some foam bats in it.
I found some fun accessories at the Target dollar spot and Dollar Tree – these creepy holographic pictures, skeleton skull, foam pumpkins, and ravens.
Halloween Party Food Ideas
Of course, the party food needed to be Halloween themed, as well!
Clementine Pumpkins
To make these, simply peel your clementine oranges, and push in a small piece of celery for the stem.
Bat Fruit Kabobs
To make these, I cut the bats off of plastic bat rings and hot glued them to the kabob sticks. Add fruit, and you are done!
Halloween Party Punch
I washed some plastic eyeball decorations and add them to the orange party punch I made. I didn’t get a picture before it was almost gone – that is how good this punch recipe is!

Easy Spiderweb Cake Design
For the cake, I made a regular box mix round cake with homemade white buttercream icing. To create the spiderweb effect I used ready to use black icing and a round tip for the web and star tip for the border around the bottom. Then, I placed some plastic spiders on the cake.
For the cupcakes, I used Halloween cupcake wrappers and iced them with white buttercream icing. I added black plastic spider rings for decorations so the kids could wear them or take them home.
Halloween Party Games
You can’t have a birthday party without games! We set up most of the party outside. I was able to create some fun activities for the kids to do to keep them busy.
Halloween Graveyard Photo Prop
The graveyard photo area was a fun place for myself and guests to take pictures in costume. I used a plastic backdrop of a forest and a graveyard and hung it on the fence. I set up a plastic spider fence and placed some foam gravestones behind them.
During the party, I took a picture of each of the kids in their costumes in the graveyard. Later, I printed them out and sent them with the thank you cards.
Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin
Pin the tail on the donkey is always a hit at every party. For our Halloween party I found a cute pin the nose on the pumpkin game at Target. This would be very easy to make with a piece of poster board and some markers to color in a pumpkin.
They no longer carry this exact game at Target, but I found a similar Pin the Skeleton Game. And it is only $5!
Pinata
I don’t think we have had a kids party without a pinata. For this party, I found a ghost which was perfect for a Halloween theme. You could also do a bat, pumpkin, eyeball, or witch.
Halloween Costume Contest
It was fun to see all our friends in their costumes. My husband and I dressed up. I was a barmaid and he was a beer. It was pretty funny! We had a costume contest that the birthday boy got to judge. Each of the winners got a little prize.
My daughter dressed up as Cinderella.
My son dressed up as the grim reaper.
Halloween Party Favor Ideas
For the treat bags, I found some clear cellophane spider bags. I closed the bags with a spider ring.
Inside each bag, the kids got a Halloween fruit snack, mini erasers, a stretchy guy, a pack of stickers, vampire teeth, and a jelly bracelet.
All of these party ideas would work great for any Halloween costume party.
