Teacher Appreciation Gift: Water Bottles

This was a quick easy project to put together and not expensive at all. My son Thomas finished up preschool yesterday and I wanted to give his teacher and the two teacher assistants a little something to say 'thank you' for taking such good care of him this year! He really did learn a lot and had so much fun at his school.

Supplies Needed:
  • Clear acrylic tumbler bottle
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Chocolate (because everyone loves a little chocolate)
  • Sign for the straw

To put these together, I printed out a really cute saying (inspiration from The Idea Room) onto plain white cardstock for the cups:

Thank you for all you do
by quenching my
thirst for knowledge!

I cut them out, and adhered them to striped paper with double sided tape. On the striped paper, I cut out a reverse triangle on the end and cut two slits on the opposite side to slide on the straw. (I based my idea for the straw toppers on this design I found at Lisa Storms.) I also wrote over the top of the words 'quenching' and 'thirst' with a colored pencil to highlight the play on words.

Add your goodies to the cups and slide the cute saying onto the straw on top!

You can also see the personalized hand sanitizer we made for his teachers for Christmas if you need another quick, inexpensive idea! And I have a great Pinterest board with general gift ideas.

Tulip Tie Dyed Cricut Cover

I have never tie dyed before so when I was given the opportunity to try out Tulip Tie Dye, I jumped at the chance! Basically, we were challenged to try one of the tie dye techniques and use them in a unique way rather than the usual t-shirt. I had the perfect project in mind!

When I opened my box of goodies from I Love to Create, this is what I found: a HUGE box of tie dye colors - there were 12 mixable colors in the kit I received, a surface cover and some gloves.

I have been trying to finish up my craft room to share with you all. The colors in my craft room are primarily turquoise, lime green and navy. I have been wanting a cover for my Cricut to keep it from getting so dusty, so I decided to sew one myself. I used white muslin fabric that is 100% cotton. I had every intention of sharing the sewing tutorial with you, but my sewing skills are not so great and I just sort of had to wing it. Today, I am going to share with you how I tie dyed the finished cover.

Supplies needed:
  • Tulip Tie Dye (they have many different kits to choose from)
  • Surface protector
  • Gloves
  • Rubber bands
    • my kit came with all the above supplies included in it
  • Material you want to tie dye
  • Marbles - you can use regular marbles or the flat, smooth marbles
  • Empty spray bottle (optional)
I Love to Create has some great tutorials for different techniques to try.

I found a cool technique for using marbles that left you with a finished project highlighting two colors of tie dye. This was perfect for me because my kit had both a teal and lime green that would match my craft room.

Step One

Wash the material you are going to be tie dying. For this technique you want the fabric to be damp, so do not dry it.

Cricut cover before tie dye
Step Two

Lay out your surface protector and put on your gloves. (You may also want to cover the surface near your sink where you are mixing the dyes. If any of the powder gets anywhere it will react with water and dye your surface.) Place your damp fabric on your protected surface and smooth it flat.

Step Three:

Place a marble underneath the top layer of your fabric and tie a rubber band securely around the bottom of the marble. Add more marbles throughout your material working from the bottom hem up. Try to stand the marbles as perpendicular and straight up from the fabric as possible.

Step Four

Mix your tie dye colors. Find the color packet you want to use and pour it into the bottle. Now, fill the bottle with water to the indicated line on the bottle. Shake to combine. The great thing about this kit is you can mix colors to create the perfect shade.

Step Five:

I squeezed the teal color around and under each marble, taking care not to get the teal dye on the marble itself. The color will bleed a little bit since the fabric is damp.

Step Six:

Add the lime green color to the top of the marbles, allowing the color to bleed out a little onto the teal. The green was not spreading enough around the marble because of the rubber band so I used a spray bottle with some of the dye to spray around each marble.

Step Seven:

Cover your project with plastic (I just used saran wrap, but you could also fold over your surface protector) to keep it damp. Let it set for 4 - 6 hours. I let mine sit for 4 hours. I was silently freaking out because it looked so dark and that was not the look I was going for, so I figured I should wash it out sooner, rather than later!

Step Eight:

Wash in the washer with a small amount of laundry soap. Dry in the dryer. I had to let mine air dry because it shrunk a tiny bit when I washed it the first time, and I didn't want it to shrink any more. If you plan to wash your project again, wash it by itself for the first few washes so the color doesn't bleed onto your other items.

Here is what it looked like after drying:

It was still missing something, so I discovered this great tutorial online (thanks Heather!) for scribble flowers from Happy Together. I free handed some flowers with my sewing machine over the top of the lime green tie dye with navy blue thread.

I love the way this project turned out and I am happy to have one more element of my craft room completed! I have enough colors left over that there will definitely be some more tie dye projects in the future!

Happy Birthday . . . to Me!

Today is my birthday. I am turning 33. I got the sweetest good morning from my son. I woke up a little bit before him. He walked out into the living room with his super sleepy eyes and before he said anything else, he said to me in his super excited voice, "Happy Birthday Mommy. Now you are 33!". It was one of those moments that makes being a mommy all worthwhile.

One Kings Lane
I have to admit. Lately, I have been in a real funk. I can't really put my finger on what is not right, but it is something. Mostly I am just burnt out! I don't like to use the word 'should', but I should be happy. I have a great husband, two awesome kids, I get to be a stay at home mom like I always wanted. Somewhere along the way, though, I think I have lost a little of myself.

themetapicture.com
I am sure some of you other moms out there can relate. I tend to put myself last. I am the last one to start eating at dinner. Only after everyone has what they need do I sit down and actually eat myself. I am the last one to get dressed and ready in the morning, only after the kids are up and ready to go. I make their breakfast, comb hair, help them get dressed, get their teeth brushed, get all of our stuff ready to go, pack snacks and diapers and anything else we might need while we are out. Then, and only then, do I get ready myself.

Now, please don't think I am complaining. I love being a mom, but I am having a hard time having anything to give them right now since I am not taking very good care of myself. For me it is so hard. I feel tremendous guilt when I do things for myself. As if I should be doing something else! It is so silly. How can I think I can take care of anyone else if I am not taking care of myself? I have written about taking care of yourself as a mom before, and it is time I take some of my own advice!

from Pinterest
So, with this new birthday I am going to start taking care of myself. Putting my needs first. I can't do that all time, nor should I, but at least some of the time I need to do things I want to do, just because I want to do them. I need to stop making excuses for why I can't/won't/shouldn't get out of the house without the kids. And I really need to start making exercise and sleep a priority so that when the kiddos are in bed I am not completely wiped out and can focus on what I love to do - crafting!

Thank you for reading along with me on this journey we call life! I am excited to start feeling like myself again.

#EclosBeauty Review and a Giveaway

** UPDATE **
This giveaway is now closed!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of éclos Skin Care. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have a confession to make. I am really bad about washing my face at night. On a typical night I don't wash my face and I sleep in my makeup and sunscreen from the day. I know this is bad, but my skin has always been okay and I just didn't worry about it. Now that I am in my 30's I am noticing that my skin isn't too happy with me with my lack of a skincare routine. Gotta love getting older! When I was given the opportunity to try out Ã©clos Skin Care, I jumped at the chance to finally do something about my skin.

If you read my blog regularly, you know I try to be green and not use a lot of chemicals to clean my home. For some reason I have not made the same leap in my beauty products. I have really been wanting to try some more natural beauty products and this skin care line is just what I was looking for!
Eclos_StarterKit.jpg
éclos Skin Care features Apple Stem Cells. Plant extracts, vitamins and anti-oxidants are combined with the Apple Stem Cells to help minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and tired skin. All of their products are free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, petrochemicals, parabens and sulfates. I have sensitive, oily skin, so I was happy there was nothing artificial in their products.

The starter kit I received included:
  • Facial Cleanser Skin Prep
  • Cellular Activator Face Serum
  • Moisture Therapy Regenerative Cream
  • Restorative Eye Cream
  • Skin Renewal Clay Mask
  • Terry Cloth Head Band
I tried all of the products in the kit for a little over a week. I used the clay mask and facial scrub twice. I used the skin prep, facial serum, eye cream and regenerative cream in the morning and at night. Right away, the first thing I noticed was that the facial cleanser removed all of my makeup completely. I have tried other face washes in the past that will leave mascara or other residues on my face. The first time I tried the clay mask it felt tingly and I started to get a little worried, but the tingly feeling went away after about 30 seconds. After it was rinsed off, it made my face feel really smooth.

After using the products for a week. I did not notice a huge difference in fine line and wrinkles, but I don't have a ton to begin with. My face definitely feels smoother and healthier, though!

Here you can see my before and after pictures (I purposely did not edit these pictures so you can get a good idea of how my skin looks. I am also make up free in the pictures.):

Felt Cat Bookmark

Have you ever been over to Allison's blog, Little Lovelies? It is one of my favorites! She has some excellent tutorials - especially for embroidery and cross stitch that you will definitely want to check out.

When trying to figure out what to make my mother-in-law for Mother's Day, I was stumped. I came across a tutorial for felt flower bookmarks by Allison at Thirty Handmade Days, and I knew it would be perfect. My mother-in-law is an avid reader. She also loves cats, so I adapted the tutorial from a heart to cat. I am pretty pleased with the result.

I followed Allison's tutorial. The only changes I made, was that I obviously used a cat for my inspiration. I did a Google image search for 'cat coloring pages'. This was the first one that popped up.

via Google Images
I saved the image, inserted it into a word document and shrunk the image down to the size I wanted. I cut out the image and used it to trace the front and back pieces of felt. I added some embroidery details and then hot glued them onto the paper clip.

Using the card that was shown on the original tutorial as inspiration, I made a card for the bookmark to be displayed on. I created the file in My Memories software.

I think my mother-in-law is really going to love it. Did you make anything for Mother's Day this year? I would love to see your ideas!

Cabochon Earring Tutorial and a Giveaway

** Giveaway is now closed **

Pink Floral Cabochon Earring Tutorial

I recently purchased some fun cabochon resin flowers and earring bases. I am going to show you how to create your own earrings. You could also make a pendant or a ring in the same manner. It is so easy, you will wonder why you have never made any before!

How to Make Cabochon Earrings

Supplies Needed:
  • Cabochon Flowers (matching set if you are making earrings)
  • Earring base posts
  • E6000 Glue

Step One:

Using your E6000 glue, add a small dab to your earring base.

Step Two:

Add your cabochon flower to the earring base. Allow to dry according to glue directions. (The beauty of this glue is it really holds and it allows you to move your pieces around a little before it sets, so you have time to perfectly place your flower!)

See - I told you it was simple. Only two little steps.
