Valentine's Printables

I don't usually do a lot of decorating for Valentine's Day. I have a few little things to decorate with, but really not much. I thought this year I would create a few items to display on my front entry table. When I saw this quote on Pinterest, I knew I had to do something with it!

I created a printable that could be framed or displayed in some other way. I am going to have it printed as an 8 x 10 photo and frame it. Each printable is 8 1/2 x 11 (but will print fine as an 8 x 10 or a 5 x 7). Click on the links below the picture to download your own.

Spruce It Up Sunday {No. 2}

For this week's Spruce It Up Sunday, I thought I would share some of my favorite Pinterest finds to help you get organized.

Shoe organizers can be used for so many things. You can use them to house smaller crafting supplies, kid's art supplies (I did this in my house!), small packages in your pantry, mittens, scarves and hats in your closet. The possibilities are endless and they are not overly expensive.

Scrapbooks Etc.

Utilize the under-used space on the inside of a cabinet door. This one combines a shoe organizer and the back of the door - double bonus points!

Baskets and bins are great for organizing on shelves and in closets, but have you ever thought about using them in your refrigerator or freezer? This is an easy way to keep like things together. You can even set up a basket for snacks for your younger kids to be able to help themselves. Keep lunch making supplies together to make mornings easier!

Crate and Barrel
Last, but not least. Have you ever needed to unplug an electrical cord but couldn't figure out which one to unplug? This is one of those "why didn't I think of that" type projects. Use your plastic bread tabs to organize the cords plugged into a power strip. (I have also labeled the cords using my label maker. I print out a sticker and then just wrap it around the cord.)

So get out there and get organizing! You will be so glad you did. :) Do you have any simple, inexpensive organizing tips to share? I would love to hear them.

Giveaway: My Memories Suite Software v3

** Update**
This giveaway has now ended.

Today's giveaway is from My Memories!

For those of you not familiar with this software, head on over to their website and check it out. From the My Memories website:

" MyMemories Suite v3 software is a complete digital scrapbooking solution that provides a comprehensive powerful set of creative tools no other scrapbook software can offer. With its intuitive workspace and enhanced time-saving features, this application is perfect for a beginner to create a complete album in minutes, or to empower the design pro to build a scrapbook album masterpiece. "

They offer an easy to use digital scrapbooking software that you can use to create beautiful scrapbook pages in just minutes. And sharing your pages is as easy as a click of your mouse. You can build a page from scratch or use one of their many pre-designed templates.

Following are a couple of pages I made with the software:

The above page was made using the May Flowers Quickpage that I downloaded for free from the My Memories website. I added my pictures from my daughter's birthday. Then, I added the Happy Birthday and 2012 text. Lastly, I added brads in each corner (these are included in a ton of colors and styles within the software).

A new feature that was added when they created version 3 was the calendar template. You can easily create customizable calendars. This feature is included with the software. The above calendar was created using elements from the Eskimo Kiss free download (no longer available). I added the calendar template, used a paper background, and then added embellishments - snow border on the bottom, icicles on the top and snowflakes throughout. The options are really endless here for making a calendar.

Remember this Important Dates Sign I made last year? I created this with the My Memories software as well! There is just so much you can do with this software!

From downloading the software to creating a page, My Memories Suite v3 software is easy enough for a beginner but has enough elements to make even a seasoned scrapbooker happy. They offer so many free and inexpensive downloads on their website.

You can also follow My Memories on facebook. Each Friday, a free page kit is offered to download to use with the My Memories software. But if you don't have the software, still check it out. You can use these free files with any photo editing software (Photoshop, etc.)!

Spruce It Up Sunday {No. 1}

One of my goals for the New Year is to have more focus to the blog, rather than just posting randomly all the time. I do love posting in 'real time' but I also have weeks where I don't have much in the way of craft projects to post yet. Another goal is to get more organized around the house and to simplify how our house runs.

So, to work on two goals at once, I have created Spruce It Up Sunday! I am going to be sharing my organization and cleaning tips to hopefully make all our lives easier. Some weeks, it will be a simple tip on how to get something done faster (like this week) and other weeks, I will be sharing majorly overhauled spaces (like my kids rooms!) It might be a project I have done on my own, or it may be a project that was inspired by someone else (as it is today).

I am truly excited about this and I hope you are too! And really the goal of all of this is to have more time for the things I want to do, rather than all of those things I need to do.

Let's get started. Today I am going to share with you an article I found on RealSimple.com.

Speed Clean your Stove Top
Click on the link above to be taken to the full instructions. I use this every time I clean my stove top. It only takes 5 minutes to do and you will love the results.

 Some helpful tips:
  • If your stove top is particularly dirty (mine was, I hadn't really scrubbed it since before the holidays - don't judge) then it may take you more like 10 to 15 minutes to get this done
  • I try to use biodegradable or natural cleaners. Here is what I use:
    • All purpose cleaner: Simple Green concentrate (diluted 1 part simple green: 10 parts water)
    • Glass cleaner: Mixture of vinegar and water (1:1) You can add a few drops of essential oils to this, like lemon, orange or tea tree oil to make the smell better if you wish.
  • For stuck on grime and gunk, make a paste of baking soda and water. Add just enough water, so the baking soda is spreadable. Spread this over the the spot you wish to clean, wait between 5 - 10 minutes and then wipe off. Rinse with water. (I had to do this with my stove top as I had some spills that were completely cooked on there and would not come off with just all purpose cleaner.)
  • I use microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. That is just me since I am trying to reduce my carbon footprint, and I think these cloths work so much better than a plain paper towel.
  • Wipe up spills as soon as they happen (once your stove top has cooled down). This way they will not become baked on the next time you use your stove!
If the stove top isn't clean, then the kitchen doesn't truly feel clean for me. Do you have any other tips about cleaning your stove top? I would love to hear them!

Walgreens Prescription Savings Club

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

This post is outside my normal range of posting, but I thought it was important information to pass along, especially since our family uses this service. I try to stretch my dollars as far as I can and this is a great way to do just that.

According to CNNMoney*, 16.3% of Americans were without health insurance in 2010. Many other Americans have health insurance but are under-insured. If you have a health condition that requires any type of prescription, you know this can become quite costly. Especially now with it being cold and flu season, we tend to go to the doctors a lot more!

The Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens plan allows you to save on:
·         more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications
·         discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies
·         bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services

For a limited time Walgreens is offering this plan for only $10 for everyone in your immediate family, including pets and dependents 22 and younger. Individuals can join for just $5.

This is a great deal! We purchased this membership for our family last year when it was not at discounted rate, and it paid for itself with the first prescription we filled.

You can also support Walgreens by liking Walgreens on Facebook  and joining Walgreens on Twitter.

Remembering Mom on her Birthday

I have so many thoughts and emotions swirling through my head and heart today. Today is what would have been my mom's 60th birthday!

For those of you who are new to my blog, my mom passed away when I was 8 years old from breast cancer. She was only 32 when she was first diagnosed. This year has been particularly hard for me because I am now 32. My son is the same age I was when my mom was diagnosed. It is hard to imagine what she must have gone through. Now that I am a mom myself, I can not even begin to imagine what that would have been like. And the thought of it terrifies me.

My Mom and I
I guess what amazes me even more than the fact that she got breast cancer, was her upbeat attitude about it. I know I have a skewed perception of what she was going through since I was only a child, but if I remember nothing else, I remember her always being there for me. And even going above and beyond in so many ways. She sewed clothes for me and my dolls. She was my Brownie Troop leader, she attended my brother's sporting events. If it were me, I don't know that I would have even been able to get out of bed.

My Mom in high school
On anniversaries like this, I often find myself playing the "what if" game. I know it doesn't get me anywhere and it is hardly productive, but it is hard not to. What would my life be like if she hadn't died when I was so young? Would I live in Arizona? Would I have chosen a different career path? Would we be best friends? Would I be a better seamstress? Would I know how to crotchet and knit? Would we have had a falling out in my teen years as so many kids and their parents do?

My Mom with me and my two brothers
Would I be a different person? Obviously the answer is yes and no. I would be a completely different person than I am now, and I would also be the same. These are the thoughts that go through my head. Are they logical? Probably not.

I was talking with my husband today about it being my mom's birthday. My son (age 5) overheard our conversation. Here is what he said,

     Thomas: "Did your mommy die?"
     Me: "Yes."
Thomas: "But today is her birthday?"
     Me: "Yes."
Thomas: "Are we going to celebrate it?"
     Me: "No, we aren't."
Thomas: "But every year when someone has a birthday they grow and grow."

How do you respond to that? It breaks my heart each and every day my children have never met my mom. And there are fleeting moments, when I will look at my son or daughter and see my mom's face staring back at me. I try to make it a point to talk about my mom to my kids, but I hardly knew her myself.

Favorite picture of my Mom with her brothers
She looks so happy!
I miss my mom. I wish I could give her a hug. I wish she could come over and take care of me when I am sick. I wish she could hug and hold her grandchildren. I wish she could have met my husband and seen me get married. I wish I could have her over for a weekly dinner. I wish so many things.

But most of all, I wish my mom a Happy Birthday up in heaven! I know she is smiling down on my brothers and I right now.

I love you, Mom.

No Sew Fleece Blanket

Today I am going to share a quick and easy project almost anyone can do with very few tools. The entire project takes less than an hour from start to finish. Plus, if you can get your fabric on sale you can make this project very inexpensively!

Supplies Needed:
  • Two pieces of coordinating fleece fabric (they should be the same size)
  • Rotary cutter and mat (or scissors)
  • Clear ruler with guides (or a regular ruler)

Step One:
Lay your fabrics out right sides together.

Step Two:
Trim off selvage edges (the parts with the writing on them). Trim up your fabric so they are the same size. (Often when you get fabric cut at the fabric store, it will be a little uneven. You want to be sure your two pieces are the same size. This project is very forgiving though. If you have less than a 1/2 inch difference you can probably leave it, as is.)

Step Three:
Cut squares out of each corner. You can cut the squares anywhere from 5" to 7". I wouldn't go much smaller or larger than this. If you cut the square any smaller than 5" you will not have much to work with to tie. If you go much larger than 7" you will have very long strips hanging off your quilt. I cut mine to 5 1/2". (This is where a ruler with guides comes in handy, but you can certainly just mark it off with a regular ruler and trim with scissors).

Step Four:
You will now use your ruler and cutter to make one inch wide strips around the entire blanket. They will be whatever length you cut your squares to. So my strips were 1" wide by 5 1/2" long. Depending on the size of your fabrics, it may not work out to do 1" strips across the entire length. If this happens, I usually just split the difference on the last two strips in the row.

Here is what it will look like once you get your strips cut:

Step Five:
Find yourself a comfy spot on the couch, put on your favorite show or movie, and get tying! You are going to double knot the strips together. Starting at one edge where you cut your square, take one strip from the top fabric and the matching one from the other fabric underneath and tie a knot.

After first knot:

Then you will tie a second knot. This will be what holds your two fabrics together. Continue around until the whole blanket is tied. This seems like a long process, but for my blanket, it took me about 15 minutes total. (The time consuming part of this project is cutting all the strips. You can cut your time in half by having a rotary cutter, mat and ruler.)

After second knot:

Tip: As you reach each corner square, be sure you have your strips lined up. I once tied an entire row missing a strip. I had to go back an untie an entire row of strips. This is no fun! But if you check it at each corner, you will only have one row to re-tie rather than the entire blanket!

Finished blanket:

I purchased my fleece at Jo Ann Fabrics when it was on sale over the holidays. I got my fleece for about $2.50 per yard. It goes on sale quite a bit, especially in the winter. If not, use your 40% off coupon to get it at a better price.

Light Blue White Dot Fleece

Sorry, but I couldn't find the link to the butterfly fabric, but I did buy it at Jo Anns!

These blankets hold up very well to washing. Since it is fleece your strips don't fray even with repeated washings.

These blankets make great gifts. Make the blanket a little smaller for a baby gift, or a little larger for a grown up! I think every member of my family has one now! :)
