Baby Shower: Advice Book

At my friends' 'Enchanted Forest' baby shower I hosted, I had each guest write some words of advice for the parents-to-be. I wanted to make a special keepsake for her that would include all of those cards, plus some other quotes that I had found about parenthood.

I used a DCWV Premium Stack called 'Linen Closet Matstack' for the cardstock papers that made up my book. Half of the pages were glittered. These papers are already 4.5" x 6.5", so they worked perfectly for the size of the advice cards to leave some space on the side to attach them with a binder ring. The embellishments were all ones I found at Jo Ann's in their dollar aisle.

I embellished each page that the guests wrote on, as well as the quotes that I had printed out on my computer.

I tied ribbons around the binder ring and embellished the front cover using a vellum quote glued to a glitter frame and the whole thing was attached using foam squares.

The very last page of the album included the quote that was on the invitations that I made for the shower. I felt like this was a good way to tie everything together.

Following are the quotes I printed out and included in the book. I wanted there to be a mix of practical, sentimental and humorous ones.

In the sheltered simplicity of the first days after a baby is born, one sees again the magical closed circle, the miraculous sense of two people existing only for each other.
-Anne Morrow Lindbergh

The most important thing a father can do for his children is love their mother.
-Author Unknown

Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother.
-Lin Yutang

There was never a great man who had not a great mother.
-Olive Schreiner

Always be nice to your children because they are the ones who will choose your rest home.
-Phyllis Diller

Frogs and snails and puppy-dogs' tails,
That's what little boys are made of.

Children seldom misquote you. They more often repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.
-Mae Maloo

There is no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one.
-Jill Churchill

Do More by Doing Less

Today I am making a promise, of sorts, to myself. Documenting it here will keep me accountable. I love blogland. I love pinterest. I love facebook. Unfortunately, all of these loves keep making my project to do list longer and longer and longer . . . there are just too many great projects I want to do out there. The inspiration I get from other bloggers inspires me to create! However, as my list keeps growing and growing, I tend to lose focus. My list gets longer, but I end up not actually finishing anything. Does this ever happen to you?

I will be working on one project and then I see something on another blog, and I think, "That would look great in my _________ room," or "That would be perfect to organize/decorate this space in my home." So I add another project to my list of "To Dos". Then I am out shopping and I pick up some or all of the items to work on this new project, all the while having 10+ other unfinished projects at home. This has to stop. It makes my head spin.
Lately, I have been feeling the strain of being a stay at home mom and trying to "do it all". I have experienced this before. Crafting is a way for me to do something I love and recharge my spirits, but when it starts to stress me out, it is defeating it's purpose.

So, today, I vow to COMPLETE (yes, complete) at least three quarters of my projects before I buy anything new for any other projects or start any other projects that I can create from supplies on hand.
Here is my list (in no particular order):
This will also act as a sneak peak for those of you who read my blog regularly of what you will be seeing on here.
  1. Refinish ceiling fan in living room
  2. Dog food storage container
  3. Gallery wall for front entryway
  4. Drinking glass corral
  5. Pajamas that I started for Thomas a year ago (you heard me right, I said a year ago) - probably will have to be a gift for a friend with a smaller little boy now!
  6. Pillowcase apron(s)
  7. Apron from vintage fabric
  8. Apothecary jars
  9. Upcycled garden tote
  10. Adding strap to coupon binder
  11. Thomas' first year scrapbook album (he is only going to be 5 in October, so I have got time - ha!)
  12. Make some new layouts for Etsy
  13. New canopy for swing set
  14. Refinish train table
  15. Finish railroad tie border on front of house
  16. Cushion for toy bench in Olivia's room
  17. Lay brick border and mulch under swing set
  18. Tile kitchen counter tops
  19. Beadboard back splash for kitchen
  20. Fix everything in my 'mending' pile
  21. Cross-stitch birth stats wall hanging for my son's room (he's only 4!)
Wow. More projects on there than even I was thinking I had. And this is the list I just typed up from memory. There could be more. Can you see now I need to buckle down and just focus on this long list rather than adding anything new? I will add anything else I remember once I think of it. But as of right now with 21 27 projects on the list, I need to complete 16 21 before I can take on anything new. Whew! Let's see how I do . . .
* UPDATE *
Added to the list that I forgot (I have found these other projects around my house that I didn't remember when I made the original list!):

  22. Covert dress to skirt
  23. Beaded wreath
  24. Refinish small toy chest
  25. Corduroy purse
  26. Cross-stitch pillowcase
  27. Washer necklace

Pink Cupcake Birthday Party

I have been doing boy birthday parties for four years now. Eight years, if you include the parties I have done for my husband since we started dating. So, for my daughter's first birthday I wanted to do something PINK, but not to theme-y. I know we will have plenty of time for Dora, Barbie, and those types of parties as she gets older. So I thought a fun idea would be a cupcake theme.

I hand made the invitations to fit a standard No. 10 size envelope.

To make the invitations:

  1. Base. Cut pink textured cardstock for the base (4" x 9 1/4").
  2. Party details. I created a word document with all the party details in pink and brown using the font, 'Gigi', and printed them on plain white cardstock. (I was able to get 3 invitations per one sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock.) Cut to 3 1/2" x 8 3/4". This allowed for a 1/4" border of the pink cardstock. I adhered the white pieces to the pink pieces using my tape runner.
  3. Cupcakes. I used the 'Sweet Treats' cartridge on my Cricut to cut out the little cupcakes in pink and brown cardstock on the bottom. I embellished each one with a little bit of glitter in the center of the flower. I attached the cupcakes using a glue dot.

For the kid's favors, I used cellophane bags that each included a ring pop, My Little Pony fruit snacks, Brachs candy hearts, and a Chinese finger puzzle. I created another paper cupcake using my Cricut and the 'Sweet Treats' cartridge and attached it using a pink staple.

Close up of the paper cupcake. I embellished each cupcake
with glitter glue at the top scalloped edge. I then wrote each child's
name on the cupcake.
To decorate the table, I used a throw away pink table cloth from the Dollar Tree. I made some giant cupcakes using the same Cricut 'Sweet Treats' cartridge. (I love this cartridge by the way, if you can't tell by this post). My daughter's name, Olivia, was made using my Cricut, as well.

I made a giant number '1' using the 'Sweet Treats' cartridge and hung pink balloons and streamers on the wall.

Above the table

Pink polka dot paper for the number '1'
Yellow paper for the flame, embellished with glitter glue

Table with all the food on it

I made a utensil holder (you can see it in the above picture in the upper left corner of the table). All you need is a cardboard drink holder and some contact paper. I will be posting a tutorial of how to make one soon.

For food we had:
  • Hamburgers and hot dogs
  • Deviled eggs
  • Veggie tray with Fiesta Ranch Dip by Hidden Valley (you should try this stuff)
  • Fruit salad
  • Homeade chex mix
For drinks we had:
  • Cucumber water
  • Sun tea
  • Fruit punch (Hawaiin Punch, Sprite and Pineapple Juice)
Cupcakes were made with boxed cake mix, and homemade
buttercream frosting, tinted pink. I found some cute brown
and pink wrappers with cupcakes on them at Walmart.

her birthday crown. See that super cute candle?
Got it at Walmart of all places! (They have them in
blue as well).

(And for those of you who know me, yes, Olivia's party was in January and I am just posting about it now. Better late than never, right!)

Make Your Own Crayons

If you live in a house with kids that color, you probably have some broken crayons. In our house, we get a lot of these, especially since my one year old loves to dump things. She dumps out the bucket of crayons at least once a week. This results in a LOT of broken crayons.

Instead of throwing the broken pieces away, why not make some new ones to use?

Supplies needed:
  • Broken crayons
  • Oven
  • Silicone mold
Step One:
Grab your little helper and start peeling the labels off your old crayons. This part is super a little tedious.

Step Two:
Place your silicone liners inside a metal muffin pan. (You can use just a plain metal pan here, but it is harder to get the finished crayons out!) If you are using a silicone mold that is all one piece you can skip this step. They have some super cute molds in star, heart and other shapes that would make really fun crayons!

Step Three:
Fill your molds with broken crayon pieces. We added a whole hod podge of different colored crayons to each mold. You could also sort all your red crayons, yellow crayons, blue crayons etc. into each mold to make a new, singular colored crayon.

Step Four:
Bake your crayons at 200 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes. We set the timer for ten minute increments to check on the crayons.

10 minutes later . . .
The crayons just look sort of sweaty.

25 minutes later . . .
Finished crayons. At this point I was silently freaking out
thinking the crayons were going to be all one color. I was
starting to get pretty disappointed at the whole process.
Step Five:
Allow your crayons to cool down. Pop them out of the silicone molds.

Bottom of the crayon - Thank goodness!
See. All swirly and pretty like I had hoped!

Step Six:
Enjoy your new color creations! :)

New Favicon for Blogger

I just got a new 'Favicon' for Blogger.

Does it sound like I just spoke some foreign language - no worry!

'Favicon' is just a fancy word for favorites icon. See up at the top of this page - the very, very top even above my title that says the name of my website - "Laura's Crafty Life"? Now see right next to it the teeny tiny picture that is there? Well, you might not be able to tell because it is SO small, but it matches my blog button I created to the left.

Blogger just made it super easy to change yours from this:

Standard Blogger Favicon

To this (or obviously, whatever image you so choose):

My Blogger Button Image

Cool huh?

Well it is easy, peasy thanks to Blogger's new feature.

1. From your blogger dashboard, click on the 'Design' link.

2. Click on the new Favicon 'Edit' button. A new pop-up window will appear.

3. Click on 'Choose file' and choose any picture file you have saved on your computer. Mine is a copy of my blogger button you see on my sidebar.

4. After you have chosen your file click 'Save' and you are done!

** Update - If you are using the new Blogger interface, you can now find a new tutorial for how to change your favicon. **

Thrift Store Find - Organizing Junk Drawer

I have been on a cleaning and organizing extravaganza at my house for months now. I know, I know, you're thinking, "You should be done by now." Unfortunately, this seems to be an ongoing process. I am somewhat of a pack rat. Although, I am an organized hoarder, so you might not actually know it about me - even if you come to my house. I am one of those people that thrives on order. And I can always tell when it is time to start re-organizing the house because my mood goes from happy to crappy in no time flat!

Which brings me to my post.

I love thrift stores. They have GREAT stuff for almost no money!

The last time I went into Goodwill I scored this inexpensive metal utensil holder in great shape. It was only $1.99 so I knew I had to get it. I figured I would be able to use it somewhere to organize something. (See? - pack rat/hoarder = me.)

(Sorry, I didn't take a picture of it empty!)
A few days passed and I went into my junk drawer to find something - honestly, I don't even remember what - and this is what I was blessed with:

Cute, right?
Not so much.

I couldn't really find anything in there. I have all these little plastic and metal organizer trays in there, but since they weigh almost nothing they move around all over the place. So, after a few months, everything is all over the drawer. Add in the fact that we just toss stuff in there, and this is what you get!

As I am scrounging through the drawer to find whatever it was that I needed, and I thought "Perfect! I can use the new tray I bought at Goodwill to fix this!"

I decided to organize it my favorite way - empty the space and take it all out. I had stuff all over every counter. But, about 10 minutes later I was blessed with this:

Ahh, so much better!
I would say it took me another ten minutes to put back all the stuff that was in the drawer that shouldn't have been there. Not too bad for 20 minutes of work. I don't know what it is about a clean and organized space that makes me so happy, but it just does. This one made me especially happy because it only cost me $1.99!

What organizing projects have you done that just make you happy?

Monsoon Season is Here!

Is there anything more fun than being a kid in the rain?

We live in Arizona and are usually blessed by monsoon rains this time of year. We had our first one over Fourth of July weekend. The kids had so much fun playing in the rain.

They each took a bucket (and a dog bowl) to catch rain out from under the porch roof.

My littlest one wanted to go down with the "big" boys. I was worried she would get upset once the rain hit her, but she loved splashing around in the puddles.

The boys had fun racing from the porch to the fence and back.

Poor little baby got caught when the rain started to really come down. She was yelling for someone to come and get her. The awesome mom that I am, I didn't really want to get soaked, so I tried to coax her back up on the porch by herself. It wasn't going to happen (I did eventually go down and grab her, but not before I took a picture of it!)
